Hurricane Season Starts Soon — Are You Ready?

There’s still time to get ahead of the Atlantic hurricane season, which officially begins on June 1st. The second half of May is the perfect window to double-check your plans, stock up on supplies, and make sure your home — and your insurance coverage — are ready for whatever the season may bring.

Know Your Risk

Hurricanes aren’t just a threat to coastal areas. These powerful storms can bring storm surge, high winds, flooding, and even inland damage hundreds of miles from where they make landfall. Understanding your home’s specific risk level — whether from water, wind, or both — is the first step in being prepared. Check your flood zone and research how your area has been impacted by past storms. You may want to check the National Hurricane Center website for details.

Create Your Emergency Plan

Develop a plan for both evacuation and shelter-in-place scenarios. Know your evacuation routes, identify nearby shelters, and determine where your family will go if you need to leave your home. Make sure everyone in your household understands the plan — and consider sharing it with neighbors, especially those who may need additional help in an emergency.

Stock Your Hurricane Supply Kit

Having essential supplies on hand well in advance of a storm can make a huge difference. Your emergency kit should include:

  • At least one gallon of water per person, per day for seven days
  • A seven-day supply of non-perishable food for each person
  • Prescription medications and copies of prescriptions
  • Pet food, water, and medications
  • Toys, books, or games to keep children occupied
  • Cash (since ATMs may be down during power outages)
  • A full tank of gas and fully charged devices
  • Extra batteries and a battery-powered or hand-crank radio

Consider filling your bathtub with water before a storm as an emergency backup supply. It can be used for flushing toilets or boiled for drinking if necessary.

Secure Your Home Before the Storm

Now is the time to take action to protect your property:

  • Clean out gutters and storm drains
  • Trim trees and remove any weak branches
  • Secure or store outdoor furniture and loose objects
  • Install storm shutters or have pre-cut plywood ready for your windows
  • Review your insurance policies to ensure you have sufficient coverage

Stay Informed

Make sure you have several ways to receive emergency alerts. Download the FEMA app, sign up for local alerts, and tune into the Emergency Alert System for the latest information. Familiarize yourself with local evacuation zones and routes, and take the time to practice with your family.

Help Your Neighbors Get Ready

Prepared communities are safer communities. Reach out to others who may need help preparing, including:

  • Seniors or individuals living alone
  • Families with young children
  • People with disabilities or medical conditions
  • New residents unfamiliar with hurricane procedures

A simple conversation or offer of help can go a long way in building a safer, more connected neighborhood.

After the Storm

Only return home once authorities say it’s safe. Be careful during cleanup efforts — wear protective clothing, stay hydrated, and don’t overexert yourself. Recovery takes time, and working together can ease the burden.
